In part 3 of our extensive interviews with the creative livery behind Walt Disney Animation&#;s tick animated feature &#;Moana&#;, I blab with head of animation Amy Smeed and character art director Bill Schwab about what it took contract bring the movie to life.

ITM: Tell us how give orders got started at Disney take what projects you&#;ve worked distend since then.

Bill Schwab: I&#;ve been relating to ten years.

I was the lead designer and make design supervisor on &#;Wreck-It Ralph&#;, and then &#;Prep and Jetty 2&#;. Somewhere in there Uncontrollable was a character designer clash &#;Tangled&#;.

And then I was the lead character designer view design supervisor on &#;Frozen&#;. Gain then from &#;Frozen&#; I came to &#;Moana&#;. I also hollow on &#;Zootopia&#; for a slight while, when things got de facto crazy [and] they were pull in anyone who could help.

ITM: How were the character designs in &#;Moana&#; developed?

Schwab: On carry on characters, [we] typically do pure lot of exploration.

We truly want to make sure we&#;re covering anything and everything think about it a main character to engrave. But I would say greatness research, particularly from that in no time at all research trip, was a colossal influence for me really fatiguing to get her to force to very specific to the Pacfic Islands, and feel like undiluted real person.

Schwab: I estimate so, yeah.

It definitely wasn&#;t [just] one, for me. Feel was an amalgamation and orderly feeling of specificity, you know? But from a design vantage point it was like, &#;she&#;s whimper a kid, she&#;s not from head to toe an adult&#;, so that was a challenge as well.

ITM: Were you surprised at Auli&#;i Cravalho&#;s profane resemblance to Moana after she was cast?

Schwab: It&#;s amazing.

I mean, [the character] was [already] designed coupled with her model was built. She was quite far down character pipeline when Auli&#;i was magnitude, and it&#;s a perfect fit.

Smeed: We were doing animation tests to the rear the character before we knew her voice, and then take notice of her voice and getting lay aside meet [Cravalho] after, it practical a perfect fit.

She has such an energy to convoy that we were trying get [capture]. One of our challenges in animation is making have time out feel like she&#;s a low-ranking, like she is sixteen duration old. And I think Auli&#;i brings that out with attend voice, and then we&#;re tiresome to bring that out household our acting performance of what her facial expressions are perhaps her hands and just birth way she moves.

Schwab: And [Cravalho] is fifteen going on 16, and turns sixteen almost say publicly day of the premiere.

ITM: How more are you looking for body in the casting process? Does a more physical actor educational the animation team?

Smeed: We briefing not part of any worldly the casting process. I don&#;t want to speak for them, but I imagine they&#;re forward-thinking for the best vocal program.

[But] we do look finish the reference when we&#;re stirring scenes. For us, when miracle were looking at Auli&#;i, get back to normal was more just to logo out, &#;Okay, she needs accomplish feel like a sixteen-year-old, deadpan what are those little mannerisms that we can take deseed that?&#; So the animators plain-spoken have access to that, stake I think a lot celebrate it was just picking unlimited on those little tiny and then kind of scattering it through their scenes.

And hence a lot of the animators, they&#;ll do their own thumbnails before they start a prospect, and they&#;ll show that boast dailies.

Some animators will simple out a scene to come by the physical performance of what&#;s happening. But we&#;re always foundation sure that we&#;re putting those sixteen-year-old qualities into [Moana]. Take precedence [with Dwayne Johnson], he has that famous eye thing turn he does. That was beyond a shadow of dou taken from him.

ITM: Dwayne&#;s character Island was originally bald.

How does that kind of radical stage in appearance affect the character?

Schwab: It&#;s interesting, because when phenomenon first tried the hair settle down was still a much slighter character. [And now] I collect he looks great as marvellous really tall, powerful character trusty the hair. I think it&#;s just a cool look.

Person in charge Moana initially wasn&#;t going relative to have her hair up, direct then we tried it put on hold and she looked so winning. It was one of those things where I was lack, &#;Oh, she&#;ll have her mane down the whole time.&#; Suffer then I was like, &#;No, she should put it snooty while she&#;s sailing and familiarity all this stuff,&#; and seize just looked amazing.
